Beached Fishing Boat (acrylic on Acrylic Board) (A3 unframed)
I’ve had this in my library of sketches and photos for some long time. I think it was from my trip to Kent a few years ago. I’m not sure now of the exact location, but I suspect it might be Dungeness. It’s certainly along that stretch of southern channel coast somewhere.
If I’m wrong, somebody will recognise it and let me know, for sure.
After being displeased with my last painting, even though lots of people liked it, I wasn’t happy, this one is far more to my liking. There are quite a lot of things about this that please me. I like the the application of the row of buildings in the background, and I’m very happy with the shingle and tufts of grass on the foreshore. The latter, small detail, but for me important.
I experimented with ways of representing the shingle, and I found the background of Radio 3 helped me once I started stippling the paint to get the effect. I feel the effect and the colours have worked well.
I took great pains over the boat itself. getting it right was more instinctive than planned.
Overall, I am quite happy with this one.
