Bruges Christmas Market (acrylic on Acrylic Board) (A3 unframed)
I love Christmas Markets. At one time they were the sole province of European cities, but now lots of UK cities hold the same thing, and in truth they are all much the same by way of goods on offer. But there’s something about European Christmas Markets that have an atmosphere and style that’s just better, and more festive. Surrounded by bars and cafes, the ambience is always inviting, and although the goods are often expensive, the are irresistible.
This one was at Bruges and when we were there we had heavy snow. Our journey home took ages and was most eventful, but nevertheless, we had a brilliant weekend, and being at the market in a snowstorm was rather magical
As for the painting, I really like the way I have treated the trees and what’s behind them, and I’m pretty happy with the architecture, but I feel it went astray with the figures and foreground. But it ended up better than I thought it might.
