Drainage channel, near Chatteris (A4 Watercolour on watercolour paper) (Unframed)
I gathered quite a lot of material in my Fenland sketchpad and on camera when I had a few days in Chatteris in September. I love The Fens, the big skies and wide horizons, with unbroken views for miles.
This scene is pretty typical of the Fenland landscape and the area is riddled with dykes, drains and rivers that keep the land drained and fit for agriculture.
I love the. way the drain, straight as can be, disappears into the far distance. A super exercise in perspective if one is needed. I had trouble representing the masses of reeds and grasses, and did my best to represent these without attempting to be completely accurate.
Anyway, here is my take on a Fenland scene.
