Guildhall, Norwich, from London Street ( Acrylic on Acrylic Board) (A3 unframed)
There are so many aspects of Norwich that invite me to paint them, and I try to avoid the cliche scenes that feature in a million postcards, but it’s difficult. For instance I have done two or three scenes of the market place, which is quite iconic.
This one however, or at least, this angle is less so. The Guildhall, famed for being a law court for years, and for its famous knapped flint exterior, is usually featured side ways on, but as I walked toward it on a December afternoon, this was the view that caught my eye and that I selected.
I was taken by the structure of the composition, the way the trees on the left reached across the scene, and the off centre tall tower of The City Hall, dominating the background.
]With good colours, this one was a joy to paint. One of those where the paint flowed easily. I enjoyed painting it almost as much as I enjoy being there.
