Maryport Acrylic on Acrylic Board (A3 Unframed)

I visited Maryport whilst on a trip to The Lakes a couple of years ago. Going there was an afterthought, and I arrived late on a beautiful summer’s evening. At first I was not overly impressed by the town, perhaps not arriving at the best of times, as it had pretty much shut down for the day. However, when I reached the harbour my spirits were lifted.

The harbour is an interesting collection. Many of the boats looked well used and rather past their best, which of course makes them interesting, whilst the harbour surrounds were pretty much new waterside development, affording interesting marine views.

This made for an incongruous mix, and as I was painting this, I found myself, at one stage, almost doing two separate paintings. The new style development of buildings, I was painting accurately, almost like an architectural image, whereas the boats were receiving a broader and more loose treatment.

The evening light provided some stark tonal contrasts, and I wrestled with these duding the painting, but overall, I feel quite happy with the final outcome
