Norwich from Mousehold Heath (A3 acrylic) (unframed)
I’ve painted this exact scene once before, except it was in A4 format. I wanted to paint it again and use the larger A3 format so that I could more easily widen the vista just a bit, both east and west, to include a few more landmarks, in particular, to the east, St John’s Catholic Cathedral, and St Giles Church just to the fore of the cathedral.
That’s a part of the city I very much enjoy as it contains Willow Lane, where I went to junior school. No longer a school, now I believe solicitor’s offices. What else?
This is a view that’s very nostalgic for me. I spent hours of my childhood on Mousehold, and this view of St Jame’s Hill is very well known to locals, not only affording a splendid panorama of the city, but also being the best place for sleighs in the snowy winter days.
I enjoyed painting this, and in this latter format was more experimental with the brushwork, especially in the foreground.
