The Royal Arcade is a magic corridor. It has changed little since I was a child. The shops may be different; Jamie Oliver may now inhabit what was once a butchers shop, but the facades and decor remain original, delightfully Victorian: curved glass, mosaic floors, and decorated wooden frames and window fluting. I trailed through here with my parents on Saturday shopping trips, and gazed in awe though sweet and cake shop windows. It still holds the same magic, and painting it, whilst technically challenging, was a joy.
