Steam emerging from tunnel. Oil on canvas (20 inches x 14 inches) (Unframed) I observed this whilst riding the steam railway that runs through Haworth when I was up there for a few days walking. I can never resist a ride on a steam train, and there are so many atmospheric images that I see that would make good paintings. I could not resist this one which I saw as the engine turned around at the end of the line at Keighley. The composition is in itself almost abstract, with the effect of the steam half shading the tender and the filling the tunnel, and I was not sure whether to make the actual painting more abstract. In the end, I just enjoyed painting it as I saw it.
