Charlotte (Lottie)

This is my Great Niece, Charlotte, known in the family as ‘Lottie’. I prefer Charlotte.

This is the first of my two Great Nieces, so as it stands, I still have one more to paint.

I really struggled with this composition, and almost threw it away. The photo that I used, I lifted from a Social Media site, and when I printed it off all the tones reversed, so it was akin to a colour negative. Reds were pinks and oranges, balcks were white and vice versa. I managed to print off a smaller version where the colours were accurate, or at least more so, and I used that as reference, but it was very problematic when it came to painting the detail.

Christine (experiment)

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A4) (Unframed)

Here is Christine, who hates (she says) having her photograph taken, or being painted.

I have managed to grab a few pics of her over the years, and done a few sketches and a couple of paintings, but she always pretends she hasn’t seen them.

I find that rather amusing.

I grabbed this image as a screen shot during a Zoom session, and my intention was to use as a basis for experimenting with technique. On this one I was trying to get the effect of a blurred image or double vision.

Great Niece

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A3) (Unframed)

I am gradually working my way through portraits of my family. I have done my grandchildren, sometimes more than once, and now I am working through nephews and nieces. I think this is the only  one that I haven’t done yet.

I was quite pleased with this one, better than the last one I did, probably because I had a better original to work from. I felt that the hair helped make it look more lifelike, as it was a strong feature of the picture, and once I had made a reasonable job of this, it did a great deal to make the entire picture more accurate and life like.

Great Niece 2

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A3) (Unframed)

OK, I thought it was the only one left to do last time. I was wrong! But this one, the eldest Great Niece, definitely IS the last one left to do. Here in her school uniform, I particularly liked the vibrant red cardigan. So much more interesting than the standard grey or navy blue varieties.

I worked hard on the skin tones. I found her complexion to be very soft and the cheeks were hard to blend in. It would have been easy to make the skin tones darker or with deeper hues. I avoided that and rightly so I feel.

I deliberately kept the background simple to create a vivid effect against the red cardigan. However, I felt the hair was less successful than I often manage to do it. It feels a bit harsh.

Despite this being painted at a low point in her life, the picture still reveals an innate beauty within the sitter. She sleeps peacefully but her head is in turmoil much of the time.

I always consider this kind of beauty to the timeless. Not diminished by age or illness.

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A4) (Unframed)

As I wrote before, on VE Day, despite the need for social distancing, as it was a gloriously warm day, a few of us (neighbours) gathered on our front lawns and shared a VE Day afternoon tea, Various cakes were made, and sandwiches, and we sat, spaced apart, and taking turns to go to the table and collect the refreshments.

Amongst us was Janice,  my immediate neighbour, and Janice is a great organiser. It was she who was responsible for much of the baking, and certainly for arranging for us to meet as we do quite often, on the front lawn.

I doodled as we sat, took some snaps on the trust iPhone, and later produced some acrylic A4 sketches. This is another one of them.

Jenny

I have now painted all three grandchildren, and Abigail twice. I have painted my daughter Claire, their mother, and so I thought it was now time that I added my good lady to the family gallery.

This was taken from a snap when we were walking along Lepe Beach, not far from where we live, on a rather chilly, blustery late winter’s day. You can assess the weather by the way the hair is blown about and tousled, and by the presence of a warm anorak.

I have painted Jenny twice before, but a vey long time ago, once when she was showering, leaning against the tiles under a jet of hot water, and attending to her feet. Not particularly romantic, but I liked the composition, and once when we were in Venice. Jenny was sitting in reduced light, late at night, on the edge of the bed.

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A4) (Unframed)

Here is Paula, one of my favourite models. Now that she ages, her form is delightful to paint. More soft and rounded, and she always sits in a very relaxed and assured way. Happy to be silent.

I had done some sketches and taken a few photographic images for this series, and I decided to play around with the colour values on one of the images. By hitting the dark tones I managed to get them to turn red, and I immediately liked this effect.  I very much liked the way the natural tones emerged from the reds as islands of normal skin values.

Paula with suntan

On this one I wrestled with the skin tones, as I always do, but I think looking at it, they are reasonably successful. I was once again, pleased with the work on the hair, made easier by the purchase of my new detail brushes. I did however wear one of the new brushes out on this one scrubbing at the skin textures.

On this one I deliberately blurred the background. Maybe I should have reduced it further to more of a monotone. Anyway, decisions have been made, and here it is.

Shizzy at her front door

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A4) (Unframed)

As I wrote earlier Shizzy is a delightful Chinese teacher who for almost two years has lodged next door. A few weeks ago I painted her portrait as an acrylic sketch, and as a result of that she has asked me to paint a commission piece for her.

As a memento to take back to China she wanted a painting of the front of the house, with her in the doorway. She very much wanted it with the summer roses in bloom.

She gave me two photographs, one winter view with her standing in the doorway, and a summer view with summer foliage, but without her.

I used photoshop to merge the images, and from the resulting image drafted the painting.

I thought it about time that from time to time, I moved away from, my ‘picture postcard’ images and tried to paint things that were more everyday. What in my mind I think of as ‘conversational pieces’. That is images that might be the sort of thing that I might see in my daily moving around. Figures in particular, not posed for a commission image, but just as they are, in situ.
