Paula Griffin (Stevens) seated on floor
Acrylic on Acrylic board (Circa A3) (Unframed) Paula is a person whom I love to paint. Her body is mature and has soft sculptural form. Small breasts, that when she is seated, rest on her stomach. She always has a … Read More

Paula Griffin (Stevens) with Necklace
Acrylic on Acrylic Board (Circa A3) (Unframed) This was something of a ‘quickie’. I liked the concentration of the figure, and the effect of the light to one side, casting much of the figure into shade. I enjoy painting this … Read More

Paula Griffin Watching
A3 (Acrylic on Acrylic Board) (Unframed) I am drawn to the mature figure. There is something about it that is more painterly and sculptural than the young model. A few years ago I did a few figure paintings of myself … Read More

Paula Griffin: the Secretary
I worked this commission from a photograph. I was keen to get a strong contrasts of light and shade in this composition, and I feel that I have at least captured the likeness of the sitter well in this painting. … Read More

Paula with suntan
On this one I wrestled with the skin tones, as I always do, but I think looking at it, they are reasonably successful. I was once again, pleased with the work on the hair, made easier by the purchase of my new detail brushes. I did however wear one of the new brushes out on this one scrubbing at the skin textures.
On this one I deliberately blurred the background. Maybe I should have reduced it further to more of a monotone. Anyway, decisions have been made, and here it is.

Self portrait
Every painter at some time has to try a self portrait. IT’s been a age since I last tried, so here’s another one.
I’m reasonably pleased with it. I can’t make myself look any more appealing, so it’s rather just how I am. Sorry!

Shizzy
On VE Day, despite the need for social distancing, as it was a gloriously warm day, a few of us (neighbours) gathered on our front lawns and shared a VE Day afternoon tea, Various cakes were made, and sandwiches, and we sat, spaced apart, and taking turns to go to the table and collect the refreshments.
Amongst us was Shizzy, the Chinese lodger of my immediate neighbour, and Shizzy had cooked some delightful Chinese cakes. They were, I can vouch, absolutely delicious.
I doodled as we sat, took some snaps on the trust iPhone, and later produced some acrylic A4 sketches. This is one of them.
Shizzy!

Shizzy at her front door
Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A4) (Unframed)
As I wrote earlier Shizzy is a delightful Chinese teacher who for almost two years has lodged next door. A few weeks ago I painted her portrait as an acrylic sketch, and as a result of that she has asked me to paint a commission piece for her.
As a memento to take back to China she wanted a painting of the front of the house, with her in the doorway. She very much wanted it with the summer roses in bloom.
She gave me two photographs, one winter view with her standing in the doorway, and a summer view with summer foliage, but without her.
I used photoshop to merge the images, and from the resulting image drafted the painting.

Singer at The Avon Brewery Pub, Salisbury
I visited The Avon Brewery pub in Salisbury, in June 2015, with a group of friends to celebrate the end of the previous football season, and Bournemouth gaining promotion. They serve Portuguese food: excellent. During the evening this singer set … Read More

Acrylic on Acrylic Board (circa A3) (Unframed)
I thought it about time that from time to time, I moved away from, my ‘picture postcard’ images and tried to paint things that were more everyday. What in my mind I think of as ‘conversational pieces’. That is images that might be the sort of thing that I might see in my daily moving around. Figures in particular, not posed for a commission image, but just as they are, in situ.

The Delightful Sarah Spencer: USA
I encountered Sarah, a very interesting young lady and a talented painter, via Twitter. Initial discussion about art work led to longer correspondence and we exchanged photographs that we had taken of ourselves with a view to each of us … Read More
